Oral Medicine

Oral Medicine is the specialty of dentistry that sits at the interface between dentistry and medicine.

It acts as a focus for specialist interdisciplinary care of patients with symptoms arising from the mouth that do not relate directly to the teeth. Symptoms are often chronic and may have a significant psychological and physical impact on the patient’s quality of life.

It mainly affects the soft tissue of the mouth. Oral Medicine differs from Maxillofacial Surgery in that the conditions are primarily managed without the need for surgery.

The clinical scope of Oral Medicine is extremely broad and there is close liaison with other hospital-based clinical specialties. See www.bsom.org.uk
